Kweseka

Having been asked what Kweseka means, Nicholas Marco the founder of the band had this to say: “The name Kweseka means ‘drifting ahead’ and its purpose is to showcase the rich and vibrant African experience”. The  6 member band showcases its music in the local Shona, Kalanga and Ndebele languages. It is made up of Simon Masendeke, Moreblessing Mwaipapa, Yolanda Mambo, Prosper Nyathi, Craig Ncube and Prester Chungu.

The band was founded in 2014 and is made up some of 6 talented youth from the resort town of Victoria Falls.  The band’s vision was to do their part in putting idle talent within Victoria Falls to use, instead of wasting away. The band’s leader, Prester, strongly believes in responsible management and so he taught members of the band how to make crafts using refuse materials such as bottle tops and plastic bottles. The crafts were sold and with the aid of Environment Africa, the proceeds from the sales were used to buy instruments for the band.

Since its’ inception, the band has performed in the United Kingdom Kent Dance Festival, Malaysia Dance Festival, Zambia Livingstone Dance Festival, Botswana Kasane Dance Festival, Alliance Francais in Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls Carnival, the United Nations Women’s Intengwe Community Development Programme amongst other events.
